Fabricating hard coat and soft coat Low-E glass assemblies for energy performance and code-driven glazing applications

Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass is manufactured with a microscopically thin metallic coating designed to reduce heat transfer while maintaining visible light transmission. The coating reflects infrared energy, improving thermal performance in both commercial and residential glazing systems.

Clearlight fabricates both hard coat and soft coat Low-E glass and integrates these materials into insulated glass (IG) units and custom glazing assemblies. As a Certified Guardian Fabricator, we work directly with commercial-grade Low-E products specified for performance-driven projects.

Our fabrication capabilities support new construction, retrofit applications, and historically sensitive projects where thermal efficiency must align with aesthetic requirements.

Hard Coat vs. Soft Coat Low-E

Hard Coat (Pyrolytic)

Hard coat Low-E is applied during the float process and is more durable in exposed conditions. It can be used in single-pane or insulated assemblies depending on specification and is often selected for applications where surface durability is a priority.

Soft Coat (Sputtered)

Soft coat Low-E is applied in a vacuum chamber after the glass is produced. It typically provides higher thermal performance and solar control compared to hard coat options. Soft coat Low-E is commonly incorporated into insulated glass units and commercial glazing systems where energy efficiency is critical.

Clearlight fabricates both coating types according to specification and manufacturer guidelines to maintain coating integrity during cutting, tempering, and assembly.

Restoration & Historic Applications

Low-E performance does not always require modern visual profiles.

Clearlight supports restoration projects by:

  • Fabricating insulated glass units that closely match historic sightlines
  • Integrating Low-E coatings into assemblies designed to maintain traditional aesthetics
  • Producing custom glazing that complies with modern efficiency standards when required

In some cases, building codes allow exemptions for historic structures. We can fabricate glazing assemblies using traditional methods or integrate modern Low-E performance depending on project requirements.

At Clearlight Mirror and Glass, we can support all your low-e glass needs:

  • Commercial storefronts and curtainwall systems
  • Insulated glass units (IG)
  • Multi-family and residential construction
  • Energy-efficient retrofit projects
  • Historic building restoration
  • Code-driven thermal performance upgrades
