JOB SUMMARY:

The CNC Operator is a skilled job whose main responsibilities are to operate and maintain the CNC, perform other duties at assigned work center(s) as directed by the production manager and to assist shop fabrication personnel in the performance of their duties. A competent and ambitious operator will also be trained on the tempering CNC machine and cutting table.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform all of the following satisfactorily:

  • Operate Clearlight’s CNC machine for all thicknesses of glass and all patterned glass on all four axes;
  • Perform preventative and repair maintenance for the CNC machine, including after-hours and weekend work when necessary;
  • Careful tracking of dxf files, orders, shop paperwork, conditions, glass type, glass manufacturer, and other factors which contribute to properly milling glass and reducing breakage, damage or other negative results;
  • Understanding of the technical elements, including computer programming necessary for proper operation of the CNC machine and associated computer programs;
  • Be in good health with the ability to lift 150 pounds, carefully handle odd-sized glass pieces, endure heat and loud noise;
  • Ability to properly direct other employees working on the CNC machine, maintain the machine in a clean and organized manner and to work well with others, including taking direction from the production manager;
  • Ability to handle pressure situations where large orders must be processed accurately and quickly;
  • Ability to problem solve as issues arise, both with the machine itself and with the software;
  • Learn and become proficient in each work center as assigned by the production manager in order to be a productive member of the team when the CNC machine is not operating;
  • Primary work centers include tempering oven, CNC machine, cutting table, beveling machine, flat polisher, peripheral edger, drill, and vertical and horizontal washers;
  • Perform routine tasks in the shop including but not limited to paperwork, product scanning, glass rack organization, cleaning/organizing storage areas, trash removal, general clean up, loading/unloading trucks, moving / taking inventory, breaking down and assembling wooden shipping crates and storage racks, and assisting others whenever requested;
  • Learn and follow the Clearlight’s methods and procedures while adhering to its values of hard work, honesty and pride in one’s work, including being a good team player with a positive attitude and reliable timeliness and attendance;
  • Complete required paperwork in an accurate and timely fashion;
  • Perform any and all duties as directed by the Fabrication Manager to ensure a quality product;
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations, and adhere to all Clearlight policies as indicated in the Employee Handbook; and
  • Working overtime as required to meet deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, an individual should meet all of the following:

  • Education and/or Experience – High school diploma or GED or equivalent education required; associates degree or higher preferred; vocational training and/or experience with a CNC machine preferred;
  • Driving – Valid driver’s license required and ability to operate forklifts and other heavy machinery;
  • Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and technical and procedure manuals;
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement. The ability to accurately read a tape measure, dxf file, and work with CAD software;
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to problem solve issues related to the milling of glass, staffing the CNC machine as needed and maintaining and repairing equipment;
  • Communication Skills – Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; and
  • Drug free.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Standing/Walking/Sitting: Standing and walking on concrete flooring, pavement, and uneven ground area for entire work period;
  • Lifting/Carrying/Bending/Twisting/Reaching: Regularly requires bending, twisting, and reaching.  Routinely lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds throughout the day and occasionally up to 150 pounds; asks for help from other employees when lifting heavy or awkward glass pieces; willing to help others with lifting and carrying;
  • Climbing: Climbing up and/or down steps carrying material while loading/unloading trucks; may need to climb on CNC machine for cleaning and maintenance;
  • Talking/Hearing: Verbal Communication required.  Normal hearing required;
  • Vision: Depth perception, color vision, and near visual acuity required;
  • Temperaments: Ability to work independently and under specific instructions with little supervision. Ability to perform repetitive tasks. Good at working with others as a team player; and
  • Environment Factors: Concrete floor surface. Exposure to changes in temperature/ humidity while loading/unloading trucks and while working in and around the shop.  High temperatures and noise near tempering furnace.
